Learn how to match your carpets to your curtains like an expert with these tips and tricks.

The easy answer to this question is no.

Your carpets and curtains do not have to match perfectly, but they do need to blend together. It helps if they both are in a color family together, share a neutral color palette, or they could just be complementary colors. There’s really no rhyme or reason for it. You can even choose a curtain and carpet combination based on shared textures and patterns!

But if you want them to match, there are ways to do that that will truly elevate the look of your home.

So, how do you match a carpet to a curtain?

Complementary Colors

Let’s start with a little color theory lesson.

Complementary colors are two colors that are on the opposite sides of the color wheel. Though these colors do not match, they are all complementary to each other and naturally go well together. These opposites are such a huge visual contrast that they enhance each other.

Samples of complementary colors:

Complementary colors are great for matching carpets and curtains as it makes the biggest visual statement.

For a more muted look, a yellow-colored curtain matched with blue-toned carpet will work well. But if you’re opting for a more extravagant combination, purple-colored curtains and green-toned carpet will mesh well together.

When in Doubt, Stick to Neutrals

You could never go wrong with neutrals. It doesn’t matter which room you are redecorating, with white, brown, beige, black, taupe, gray, and any shades of white, it will always work because these colors will always blend well together.

But if you’re worried that your space would look too boring with neutrals, you could always add a pop of color with your décor. For instance, you could hang up a colorful art piece on a gray wall, drape a burnt orange decorative blanket on a beige recliner, or put an eye-catching yellow ottoman near a pristine white sofa in your living room.

Choosing neutral colors is a safe way to match your carpeting and curtains without much consequence. The great thing about neutral colors is that it brings a calming effect to a space, which is great for everyone who will occupy it.

Keep It in the Color Family

Each segment on the color wheel represents the color family of that particular hue. Meaning, the amount of color families is huge and it will give you plenty of colors to choose from.

By staying within one color family, it’s already guaranteed that you can redecorate your home without a hitch. You can make your carpets to your curtains without being identical. For example, you already have a carpet that has an Oxford Blue-it is almost blue-black. You could go for a lighter shade of blue for your curtain like Aegean blue.

But if you’re still undecided and you have red or green curtains, there are close to 50 shades of red and more than 20 colors in the green family to work with.

Focus on Textures

If you don’t want to exclusively play with colors to have your carpets and curtains matched, you could choose to do so with textures.

If you have thicker, heavier blackout curtains, you can opt for an equally thick carpet for your bedroom. If you want wispy, lightweight curtains for your living room, then an equally featherweight carpet should match it. Going for a shaggy look with your bedroom curtains? You better pair it with shaggy rugs and carpets.

Patterns on Patterns

If matching by colors and textures does not work for you, matching by pattern might.

It’s a little intimidating to do patterns on patterns, but as long as you have a matching pattern at your disposal, you’re already off to a good start.

Mixing and matching of patterned curtains to patterned carpets relies heavily on the thoughtful layering of various prints and patterns to create an eye-catching and cohesive visual story. You also have to take into consideration a lot of factors, like scale, color scheme, and symmetry.

But one of the great things about matching by patterns is that you will never run out options for patterned carpets and curtains with simple and intricate designs. Using patterns will also help you avoid having to buy a specific color or to totally redecorate the entire room’s aesthetic.

If you’re still uncertain on how your carpets and curtains for your living room or bedroom will match, do not fret. Sometimes, it is just a matter of trial and error with mixing and matching of colors, textures, and patterns. You just need to make sure that the overall outcome of your space will look cohesive and streamlined.

In the end, the ultimate goal of your redecoration should always be about you being happy and proud of your own space.
